South Africa, located on the southern tip of Africa, bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, has the most diverse and spectacular scenery the sub-continent can offer, from the fertile mountainous Western Cape, to the harsh, flat and dry Karoo and Highveld on the semi-circular inland plateau. South Africa has a short and rich history since Jan van Riebeeck landed at the Cape in 1652 to become the first white settler in Southern Africa. After many wars between the settlers and the black tribes, the British and the Zulus, the British and the Boers, South Africa became the Union of South Africa on the 31st of May 1910, incorporating the Transvaal and the Orange Free State Boer Republics, Natal and the Cape of Good Hope.
