| The Golden Gate National Park located in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, in the north-eastern Free State, 60km from Harrismith and 50km from Bethlehem, was established in 1963, to protect the fauna and flora of this highland red sandstone cliff area, home to a variety of animals, like the black wildebeest, blesbok, springbok, oribi, eland and many birds including the rare brearded vulture and the bald ibis, which breed on the ledges of the sandstone cliffs. The Park derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the sandstone cliffs. |
