Mhkuze Game Reserve, a place of great beauty and high contrasts, is world renowned as a mecca for bird lovers. The reserve, proclaimed a protected area in 1912, constitutes the north western spur of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. savannah, swamps and a variety of woodlands and riverine forest. Two pans, Nhlonhlela in the north, and Nsumo in the south, lined with water lilies in summer and fringed by a haze of pale green fever trees, home to the hippo and crocodile, attract a magnificent spectacle of bird life.

Camps and Lodges in Mhkuze Game Reserve

Mantuma Camp and Tented Safari Camp
The main camp in Mkhuze features two 7-bed self catering cottages, five 5-bed and four 3-bed bungalows, six 3-bed rest huts, a swimming pool, shop for basic food supplies and curios, and a central kitchen where cooks prepare visitor's meals. The Tented Safari Camp, next to the main camp, consists of six 2-bed and four 4-bed safari tents, each with private ablution facilities, shower with hot and cold water, and open-plan kitchen.
Nhlonhlela Bush Lodge
An eight bed camp overlooking the Nhlonhlela pan, consisting of four 2-bed units, connected by board walks to a central thatch and reed lounge and kitchen where a cook is in attendance to prepare visitor's meals.
The services of a field ranger is also available for game walks.
The services of the cook and field ranger are included in the tariff.
Umkumbi Tented Bush Lodge (available from November to March)
Located south of the Nhsunduze River, consisting of four large fully equipped and furnished safari tents, each with 2 beds, shower, toilet and hand basin, a thatch and reed lounge, bar and kitchen facility, opposite a natural pan, where a cook is in attendance to prepare visitor's meals.
The services of a field ranger is also available for game walks.

 

 

Day visitor entry fee
R35.00 per adult, R18.00 per child, PLUS R35.00 per vehicle, 11-20 passengers R70.00. More than 20 passengers or mass above 3000 kg R140.00.

 

Aircraft Landing Fees
6 passengers or less: R60.00 landing fee + R40.00 collection fee = R100.00
7 or more passengers: R120.00 landing fee + R80.00 collection fee = R200.00.
Gate entry per person is charged in addition.

 

Gate Opening and Closing Times:
Summer (November to February ) 05h00 to 19h00
Winter ( March to October ) 06h00 to 18h00


Attractions and Facilities
• Picnic sites with barbecue and toilet facilities, located in several scenic spots, offer spectacular views, and game viewing opportunities.
• Day and night drives - conducted in open vehicles can be booked at Ntshondwe camp.
• Self guided walking trails traverse the wooded mountainside above Ntshondwe camp where guests can enjoy the indigenous fauna and flora.
  Conference facilities are available at Ntshondwe's thatched state-of-the-art conference centre, including the main conference auditorium with seatin for up to 120 delegates.


Restrictions
• No pets are allowed in the park.
• Firearms must be declared and will be sealed on arrival.
