300 years ago, some black tribes mined iron and copper in this mineral rich area, created during a volcano eruption some 2000 million years ago.
A copper mine started operations in 1904, but transport problems grounded it to a halt. A vermiculite mine was started in 1938 and a phosphate mine in 1951 who purchased a farm to establish a town for it's workers. The mining of copper started in 1965. The open cast copper mine being dug by the Phalaborwa Mining Company, is at the moment, the largest man made hole in Africa and the 5th largest in the world, measuring 1.5km by 2.4km and 550m deep, and growing daily. The open pit can be viewed from a special lookout point or on a tour of the mining operations on Fridays.

Because of Phalaborwa's excellent climate and close proximity to the Kruger National Park, there is an abundance of wildlife in the area.
