Pretoria was established on 16 Novenber 1855 following the Great Trek by white pioneers (Voortrekkers) from the then British controlled Cape Colony and named by its founder, Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, after his father the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius, a hero of the battle of Blood River. Some General Info on Tswane
Now, as the area's many bird species break the day with their cheerful chirps, a choir of languages answer - and a capital comes to life. It's Africa with a touch of Europe and a pinch of oriental spice. Hooting taxi's, cars old and new, buses and trains drive past hawkers selling an array of fresh fruit and vegetables from nearby farms. High up on Meintjeskop, Sir Herbert Baker's famous architectural

Over the years, Pretoria lured many an investor, and along with the industral growth, people from all over settled in and around Pretoria. Peri-urban areas such as Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and Soshanguve sprang up and grew to feed this ever expanding metropole.

Stretching out from Pretoria's pulsating rhythm, is an area incorporating the community of the beautiful Hartbeespoort Dam, the bushveld game farms surrounding Warmbaths, the rustic town of Brits and the rural yet modern Bronkhorstspruit.

The greater Pretoria metropolitan area is in excess of 900 square miles (2331 square kilometres) with a population of nearly 2 million. The longitude co-ordinate is 28 degrees 15 minutes East, latitude 25 degrees 45 minutes South.

Pretoria, the administrative capital of the Republic of South Africa and one of the major four cities in the country, is the home of several large industrial concerns including the steel producing giant Iscor, several large motor vehicle manufacturers, many fine museums and educational institutions.

Pretoria is also a city of learning. It is the base and headquarters of the largest correspondence education institution is the world (the University of South Africa - UNISA) which has many thousands of students all over the globe. The Pretoria University also has an excellent reputation and is regarded as one of the leading universities of South Africa.

Pretoria offers many places of historical interest which are well worth visiting, such as the magnifecent Sammy Marks House, the modest home of President Paul Kruger with the railing coach he used while in exile in the Eastern Transvaal during the Anglo Boer War, the Hero's Acre where Kruger and Pretorius are buried, Church Square with Anton van Wouw's statue of "Oom Paul", the Palace of Justice, the old Raadsaal and Melrose House
