Pretoria was established on 16 Novenber 1855 following the Great Trek by white pioneers (Voortrekkers) from the then British controlled Cape Colony and named by its founder, Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, after his father the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius, a hero of the battle of Blood River. Soon after its inception around the streams flowing from the |
natural fountains in the south, Pretoria became the capital of the Boer Republic "South African Republic" (ZAR) in 1860. In 1910, when the Union |
was formed with the
Orange Free State and the British Colonies, Natal and the Cape, Pretoria
became the Administrative capital of the Union of South Africa and in 1961 of
the Republic of South Africa. |
