| The first gold was found 10km south-east of Sabie in 1871. In 1895 gold was discovered at the Small Sabie Waterfall and mining stated immediately. Trees were planted to supply the mines with struts in the area and later for the Witwatersrand gold mines. Today the mines in the area have stopped mining gold but the tree plantations are thriving for the supply of wood and paper. The railway line from Nelspruit to Graskop reached Sabie in 1913. Sabie received municipal status in 1916. Climate: Hottest in December and the coldest in June with average rainfall in the summer months of 1270mm and snow on the mountain tops in winter. |
