2000 Years ago, Bushman dominated the area what is now Zimbabwe, previously known as Rhodesia, leaving behind many rock paintings in caves and on rockfaces when they were pushed south by the Bantu migrating from the north. Cecil John Rhodes wanted to use his wealth, created on the diamond mines in Kimberley, to extend the British Empire in Africa. |
|
Rhodes sent Frank Johnson and a 100 men, supported by a force of 500 British South Africa Company's police to go and occupy Mashonaland. On 12 September 1890 the pioneers reached a plain with pools of water formed by the Makabusi River near Salisbury Kopje and decided to raise the Union Jack to add a new country, Mashonaland to the British Empire. In 1893 Matabeleland was occupied and after the first Matabele War, Mashonaland and Matabeleland were joined together to form a new country, Rhodesia, named after Rhodes. In 1924 Rhodesia was devided into Northern and Southern Rhodesia, and between 1954 and 1964 these were merged into the Central African Federation, Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The Federation was dissolved in 1964 when Zambia gained independence and Southern Rhodesia was renamed Rhodesia. Independence (UDI) was declared by Rhodesia on 11 November 1965 by Mr Ian Smith, then Prime Minister, but was not recognised by the Britsh Government. Elections were held in February 1980 and Rhodesia was renamed Zimbabwe after independence on 18th April 1980. |
