		Harare, previously known as Salisbury, then named after the Prime Minister of Great Britain, was born when the 1893 Pioneer column of Cecil Rhodes, settled on a plain with pools of water formed by the Makabusi River near the Kopje on the 12th of September 1890 and decided to raise the Union Jack to add a new country, Mashonaland to the British Empire, this
historic site was named Cecil Square, now renamed Union Square in Harare. Tom Ross was given the job to layout the town, which he did to a grid pattern, with streets running north to south and avenues from east to west. Harare, named to honour Chief Neharawa, which lies on the Central Plateau of Zimbabwe between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers, 1470 metres above sea level, is a modern, colourful and friendly city with wide clean streets lined with trees.
